About Top College Consultants
At Best College Consultants, our mission is to provide unbiased, transparent rankings of the top college admissions consultants in the United States. We understand the complexities of the college admissions process and the importance of selecting the right consultant to help students navigate their journey to higher education. Our goal is to guide families through the maze of options and offer a trusted resource for finding the best consultant based on objective criteria.
Our Ranking Methodology
Every firm is scored out of 100 points. All inputs come from publicly available sources and are re-collected for each annual edition. Figures in the 2026 edition were gathered in August 2026.
Reputation, 30 points. The quantity and quality of verified reviews on independent platforms, currently Google and Trustpilot. Where a firm has a presence on more than one platform we combine the review bases and take a count-weighted average rating. Rating scores on a fixed scale (5.0 earns 15 points, 4.8 earns 13, 4.0 earns 10, below 4.0 earns nothing) and volume scores in bands (50 or more reviews earns 15 points, 20 to 49 earns 12, 10 to 19 earns 8). A firm with fewer than 10 verified reviews scores nothing on this criterion, because there is no reliable independent evidence to assess.
Results and Results Transparency, 40 points. Thirty points are awarded on the Advantage Factor, which is how many times more likely a firm's students are to be admitted than the national average. Where a firm publishes school-level acceptance rates with applicant counts, we calculate an application-weighted Advantage Factor from its own data rather than accepting a headline claim.
The remaining ten points are new for 2026 and measure results transparency, a sub-metric our published methodology always intended to include. Firms earn up to 4 points for publishing school-level acceptance rates rather than a single headline multiplier, up to 3 points for publishing the underlying applicant and acceptance counts, and up to 3 points for stating an explicit inclusion rule or carrying independent third-party verification. An unverifiable multiplier is worth less to a family than a school-by-school table it can check, and the score now reflects that.
Value for Investment, 20 points. The Advantage Factor divided by the firm's hourly rate, scored in bands. Where a firm publishes no hourly rate we use the best-documented third-party figure and note it on the firm's profile.
Web Presence and Accessibility, 5 points. The field ranked on top-three keyword count and organic search traffic, measured in Semrush.
Media Features and Recognized Expertise, 5 points. The number of distinct tier-one national outlets carrying a named mention of the firm, measured across a fixed list of 48 publications and drawn from both a uniform search and the firm's own press page.
Sub-scores for every firm are published on its profile page, so any family can see exactly where a score came from and disagree with it.
- We evaluate the quality and quantity of verified reviews from independent platforms such as Google, Yelp, and Trustpilot. Consistent, positive feedback from clients is essential to establishing a consultant's reputation.
